Physical Maintenance Program

Strong People Stay Young

Prevention Better Than Cure

Immobility is a major contributor to the physical ability in the older population. The specific effects of immobility are:

  • Decreased muscle bulk and strength
  • Decreased bone density
  • Reduced cardiovascular fitness
  • Muscle and joint stiffness
  • Impaired ability to carry out activities of daily living
  • Loss of independence
  • Decreased quality of life

By participating in regular gentle exercise, research has shown that these negative effects of immobility can be reversed and reduced.

What Is The Maintenance Program?

The program is designed to combine low intensity and low resistance exercises with education in a fun and social environment.

All participants are individually assessed by staff to organise an exercise program that suits their individual needs.

The program involves exercises using hand and ankle weights plus other balance exercises. These exercises can also be performed at home.

Who Can Participate?

The classes are open to everyone, though people specifically encouraged to participate are:

  • Men and Women over 60 years
  • Those who are currently not involved in regular physical activity
  • Those people who have had falls or have a fear of falling
  • People recovering from illness or surgery (if deemed safe by your GP)

Kerang District Health also runs a “Strength Training Program” with gentle medium resistance exercises using hand weights
